Indian realtor in Boston, MA

Devarshi Patel works in English, Hindi and Gujarati. If you would rather have the conversation in Hindi or Gujarati, say so in the first note — it is a working language here rather than a line on a profile. What follows is the part that is harder to find elsewhere: where the communities actually are, and what buying here involves if you have arrived recently.

Ask Devarshi about your situation

Where the established Indian communities are

Not in the towns most Boston real estate sites cover. The largest Indian-American populations in Massachusetts are in Burlington, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Waltham and Acton, with Framingham, Ashland and Quincy also substantial.

Shrewsbury and Westborough together hold one of the largest concentrations in the state — enough that the commercial and cultural infrastructure followed. Patel Brothers is in Shrewsbury; the Route 9 corridor through Westborough carries Indian grocery, restaurants and cinema. The Sri Lakshmi Temple in Ashland is the largest Hindu centre in Greater Boston.

Burlington and Waltham sit closer in and draw people working along Route 128 and in Cambridge. Quincy has a growing community on the Red Line. Acton and the towns around it draw families specifically for the schools.

An honest note on coverage. Most of those are MetroWest towns, and this site publishes verified figures for six inner towns — Boston, Cambridge, Newton, Brookline, Somerville and Allston-Brighton. That is a statement about what has been checked against the municipality that published it, not about where anyone should live. If your search is centred on Shrewsbury or Burlington, say so and expect a straight answer about what is and is not known well.

If you have arrived recently

The two things that most often complicate a first purchase are a thin US credit file and visa status. Neither is disqualifying, and both are better addressed with a lender months before you look at houses.

Credit history. Arriving with an excellent credit record elsewhere and a two-year US file is common, and it affects pricing rather than eligibility. Some lenders work with thin files better than others; the difference is worth shopping for early, because you cannot fix it during an offer.

Visa status. Buying on an H-1B or other non-immigrant visa is routine and lenders do it regularly. Expect documentation requirements around employment and residency intent. This is not the obstacle people fear, but it is a reason to work with a lender who has done it before rather than one learning on your file.

First-time buyer assistance applies to you. Programme eligibility turns on income, assets and not having owned in the past three years — not on how long you have been in the country. Boston grants up to $50,000 and MassHousing up to $30,000 to qualifying buyers, and property owned abroad is worth asking about specifically rather than assuming either way.

Timing, if you are moving for a job

Greater Boston's rental calendar concentrates on 1 September, which makes off-cycle arrivals genuinely harder rather than just less convenient. Renting for a year before buying is usually the cheaper mistake.

A large share of leases here begin on the same date, which pulls rental demand into the preceding months and thins inventory outside that window. If you are arriving in, say, February, expect less choice and plan further ahead than you would elsewhere.

On renting first: if you do not yet know which town suits you, a year of renting costs far less than buying into the wrong one. Undoing a purchase means a full transaction — the deed excise, the attorney, the commission — and Greater Boston towns differ enough that this is a real risk. The town comparison is here.

One protection worth knowing: a Massachusetts landlord may lawfully collect only first month's rent, last month's rent, a security deposit capped at one month, and the actual cost of a new lock and key. Application fees, pet fees and cleaning fees are not permitted, whatever they are called.

Common questions

Does Devarshi speak Hindi and Gujarati?

Yes — English, Hindi and Gujarati. Say in your first note which you would prefer and the conversation will be in that language from there.

Which Boston-area towns have the largest Indian communities?

Burlington, Shrewsbury, Westborough, Waltham and Acton have the largest Indian-American populations in Massachusetts, with Framingham, Ashland and Quincy also substantial. Shrewsbury and Westborough together form the largest single concentration, with the grocery, restaurant and cinema infrastructure that follows.

Can I buy a house on an H-1B visa?

Yes. Lenders do this routinely. Expect documentation around employment and residency, and work with a lender who has handled it before rather than one working it out on your file. Visa status is far less of an obstacle than a thin credit history.

What if I do not have much US credit history?

It affects pricing more than eligibility, and lenders vary considerably in how they handle thin files. Start that conversation months before you look at houses — it is not something you can improve during an offer.

Am I eligible for first-time buyer programmes as a recent arrival?

Eligibility turns on income, household assets and not having owned a home in the past three years — not on length of US residency. Whether property owned outside the US counts against the first-time test is worth asking the administering body directly rather than assuming, and it is exactly the kind of question the Boston Home Center will answer plainly.

Where are the temples and Indian groceries?

The Sri Lakshmi Temple in Ashland is the largest Hindu centre in Greater Boston. Patel Brothers is in Shrewsbury, and the Route 9 corridor through Westborough and Shrewsbury carries most of the grocery and restaurant infrastructure. Burlington and Waltham serve the inner-ring communities.
